Drupal is modular to give you the maximum options with the minimum code. You use only the bits you need.

Drupal arrives with a basic set of modules called the core modules. You can download and add on as many additional modules as you want. Each module is switched on and off in the administration section of Drupal. You can add on a module, switch on the module to test the result, then switch the module off if the module does not do what you want. When visitors veiw pages from your site, Drupal loads only the modules that are switched on, saving a lot of memory, and letting your site deliver pages faster.

Install new modules in /sites/all/modules. Switch modules on in Administer > Site building > Modules. Drupal core modules are provided as part of the Drupal download and may require switching on then configuring. thousands of additional modules are listed at drupal.org/project/Modules.
